What causes perfect Grace Porter to get so drunk on a girls’ trip to Vegas that she marries a woman whose name she doesn’t even know? That isn’t part of her meticulous plan to get a prestigious job with her newly achieved doctorate in astronomy.

The story of the book unpacks these questions as Grace’s plans unravel around her, propelled by the twin pressures of her graduation and marriage.

This book is beautifully written, with each sentence reading like poetry, sweet and thick like bee honey. It also addresses many important issues like mental health, sexual and gender identity and the difficulty of navigating the world as a Black queer woman, especially in a white, male dominated field.

I did find that the book dragged a bit in the middle and got somewhat repetitive but overall I found Grace’s story compelling and important.
