It takes great skill to write about depressing topics and unpleasant people with humour and empathy and in Anxious People Fredrik Backman does both. In this complex narrative about a group of (anxious) people who are stuck together when the apartment they are viewing is held up by a bank robber, Backman weaves together the stories that lead each character to this moment in time while also setting up a locked-room mystery. Written in a light, dry style this novel kept me guessing right up to the last page and I simultaneously didn’t want to put the book down or finish it and leave the characters behind.
